[SMM data] China's stainless steel import and export data-net exports increased by 43 per cent in January

Imports of stainless steel fell by 41.78 per cent to 134000 tons and exports by 11.10 per cent to 319500 tons in January 2019. Net exports also increased by 43 per cent to 185400 tons.

1. Import of stainless Steel in China

According to customs data, China's stainless steel imports increased by 35.67 per cent to 134000 tons in January 2019. The increase in import volume was mainly due to the increase in plate coil, pipe and narrowband imports, including 136300 tons of stainless steel coil imports in January 2018 and 79.5% in January 2019, with a decrease of 27.5% to 98800 tons.

2. Export of stainless Steel in China

In January 2019, China's stainless steel exports increased by 14.01 per cent to 319500 tons, while stainless steel coil exports decreased by 21.77 per cent in January 2019, an increase of 12.71 per cent to 208500 tons. According to SMM research, the initial anti-dumping ruling on stainless steel in Indonesia and other places will be finalized in mid-March, or imports will be restricted in the form of quotas. The quota system may be good for the domestic stainless steel market in the short term. Indonesia's stainless steel imports accounted for 60% of China's stainless steel imports in 2018. Under this background, the pressure on the domestic market will be alleviated for one to two months in the short term, and the price of stainless steel will be good. In the long run, it will affect China's stainless steel exports.
